Fish swimming. Credit, David Gill.CEED researcher Dr Megan Barnes was among co-authors of a new global study which has found that a widespread lack of funds and personnel are preventing marine protected areas from reaching their full potential.

Dr Barnes, who is a Postdoctoral research fellow said: “It’s clear that we need management that is effective, inclusive and ongoing #notjustarea, otherwise we risk designating MPAs without benefit to biodiversity - which would be a travesty.”

Dr Barnes said that continuing to add new marine protected areas without sufficient support for existing ones risked diluting conservation funds, leaving both new and old sites unable to conserve fish populations.
