Can protecting natural habitats both mitigate climate change and help protect biodiversity simultaneously?
Yes, but it is not that simple.
Research supported by the ARC Centre of Excellence for Environmental Decisions found protection of natural habitats that reduce land clearing can both preserve carbon stocks and protect ecosystems - which is particularly effective with careful planning.
However, the researchers also discovered the common assumption of a linear relationship between carbon and biodiversity can lead to undesired outcomes.
The research is published in Ecology Letters.
